The Ostrich Farm in Nairobi, Kenya

It is not always easy to see an Ostrich in the open plains of East Africa's National Parks. But if you have a free afternoon when visiting the city of Nairobi in Kenya you might want to visit the Ostrich farm. It is about one hour’s drive from the city centre on the Nairobi Namanga road.  A sign on the road side of the road just after Kitengela town and a six kilometer drive on a dusty road will bring you to the gates of the Ostrich farm.

At the Ostrich farm, you have the chance to see and learn about this flightless bird that can grow to between 6 to 9 feet tall and can reach speeds of 70 km/h when running. You can see Ostriches in their different stages of growth from an Ostrich egg to Ostrich chicks and when they are two, three months and fully grown. At three months old, the Ostrich is quite big and looks intimidating but the birds at the farm are friendly and will eat from your hand if you feed them with grass or other leaves.
A fully grown male  is easily identifiable from its female counterpart by its dark feathers.

The Ostrich farm has a well stocked and staffed restaurant for those who want to enjoy a drink and a meal (including Ostrich meat) after a farm tour. There is a Curio shop where you can buy Ostrich feathers and egg shells.

Accommodation is also available for those who want to stay for longer than a day and enjoy other activities on the farm including an Ostrich ride.  There is a large swimming pool for those who want to cool down after a tour on the farm or just want to relax on a hot afternoon.
