On a trip to the North African city, Emily Onyut finds out what makes Tunis different from many other African cities.
Tunis is a city unlike
many African cities. What will immediately strike you as different is the weather
depending on the time of year you are there. Like many African cities it can be
very hot during summer but again unlike many African countries which are warm
most of the year, Tunis can be very cold during winter.
Tunisians are friendly people
especially in the tourist towns and willing to talk to strangers though their
English is limited. The official language is French though Arabic and English are widely spoken. Western style of dressing is the norm.
If you love food, then
Tunis is the right place to visit with its varied cuisine. Lamb couscous is common
on the menu as is cheese and bread (both white and brown).Their version of
nyama choma (roast meat is lamb meat) and they have eating places where you can
go and eat lamb meat. Fruits are plentiful.
Tunis is a beautiful city and for a city in
Africa, it is very organized. The houses are organized and the streets are orderly
and clean. Unlike many African cities, you will not see slums in Tunis. You will not really see many high rise buildings
in the Central Business District but the structures are neat and organized. It
is a very tidy city. You would almost think you are in a city in Europe.
For the sightseeing
tourist there are many historical sites in Tunis including Carthage a suburb of Tunis and a history dating back 3000 years. You can also visit the large
shopping malls or open air markets, where you are sure to find something you
will want to carry away.
Among the famous tourist towns are Nabeul and Hammamet with hotels and
activities to cater for the visiting tourist.
For someone coming from
the Eastern part of Africa, Tunis is not a place you are likely to forget
quickly.
